Four Suppers

For most of us, we remember suppertime as a good time. We remember Momma call out “supper’s ready”. We came running like pigs to the feeding trough. There are four suppers mentioned in the Bible that we will look at today.

 Our first supper is found in Luke 14:16-23. This is the supper of salvation. Christ extends the invitation to simply “Come; for all things are now ready.” If you accept the invitation to this supper, you will be filled. If you make excuses, God will simply invite others. 

The second supper is mentioned in I Corinthians 11. This is the Lord’s supper. The communion table for believers. If you have accepted the invitation to the first supper, you have a place at this table. It’s where we partake of the bread and the cup. We reflect on and remember the Lord’s sacrifice on our behalf. 

The third supper is found in Revelation 19:9. It’s called the “marriage supper of the Lamb.” As Christians, we look forward to this banquet feast. It occurs sometime after we have been united with Jesus. 

The final supper mentioned is in Revelation 19:17. This is the great supper of God. This is a dreadful feast. If you have rejected the invitation to the supper of salvation, you will be left behind when Jesus calls His church home to heaven. At this supper, you won’t be eating, you will be the food. If you survive the first years of the Tribulation, most likely you will fall in the slaughter of the enemies of Christ, at the battle of Armageddon. All fowls of the air will gather to eat of the rotting flesh. 

Four suppers – why risk being the menu of the last supper when you can accept God’s gracious invitation to the first? Jesus said, “Come; for all things are now ready.”

Are there any Amalekites in your life?

  There is a powerful lesson about prayer in Exodus 17:8-16. Verse 8 says, “Then came Amalek...” These bands of raiders in the desert were the Israelites first adversaries in the wilderness after they left Egypt. The Amalekites were descendants of Esau (Genesis 36:12). They attacked Israel from the rear and were a thorn in their side for many years to come. Amalekites could represent any number of things: problems, troubles, adversaries, headaches–anything that drives us crazy! Joshua was instructed to gather men to fight while Moses went up on top of a hill to pray and intercede for them. Aaron and Hur went with him. As it turned out, the real battle was not with those fighting in the desert, but rather with the intercessors on the mountain. God gave the victory while Moses prayed and Aaron and Hur held up his arms. Humbly but Boldly

  Fervent prayer goes way back.  We know that prayer was a distinctive priority for the early church (Acts 1:14, 2:42, 3:1, 6:4 and many other verses). Calling on the Lord is seen in the life of the prophets; Habakkuk 3:1, Jonah 2:7, Daniel 7:17 and 9:13, Nehemiah 1:6 and 4:9, David in Psalm 4:1, 6:9 and 17:1. But prayer goes back even before Moses and Abraham!  In fact, the first mention of men calling upon the Lord occurs in Genesis 4:25 and 26. Yes, right in the book of Genesis – the book of beginnings. Before there was anything called the church, before there was a Bible, a choir, or any kind of “service” like we have today, men were calling upon the name of the Lord.  From the godly line of Seth, men somehow sensed they could call out to God and He would answer, He would listen and He would respond!
